Quentin cooke began practising Aikido in 1984 within the Ki Society of Great Britain lead by Ken Williams Sensei who is recognised as being at the root of aikido in the UK. He was graded to 4th Dan by Ken Williams Sensei. In 2000 Quentin left to explore new paths. He joined the Isshinkai Association founded by a former assistant of Sensei Williams, Denis Burke Sensei and his brother Piers Cooke. In 2004, they affiliated to Yuishinkai International, founded by Koretoshi Maruyama Sensei, an original student of the founder and former President of the Ki Society. At pretty much the same time, with his brother, Quentin founded Aikido for Daily Life. They wanted to emphasise the link between what they did on the mat and how that study should extend into the business of living. They also wanted to run an association on less hierarchical lines, giving all students a voice, in recognition of the fact that students come their own personal experiences of life and so have something unique to offer everyone they practice with. Quentin Cooke is Board member of Aiki Extensions and chairman of the International Aiki Peace Week Committee.. | ||

17.30 Lectureby Bruno Traversi Morihei Ueshiba, the founder of aikido, explained his art by distinguishing two types of relationships that the individual has with the world around him: an essential relationship, which operates from Center, and a sensory relationship, which operates through the activity of the five senses and awareness. These two ways by which a human reaches out to be part of the world involve two types of action that Ueshiba opposed to each other and through which he differentiates his own budo from other martial arts. By following Ueshiba's explanation of his art, we will try to highlight a few characteristics of aikido. Our presentation will be supported by "Takemusu Aiki" the book the founder of aikido wrote at the end of his life, and particularly the first chapter entitled "What is aikido." |
